The TUMO Studios Educational Program
TUMO Studios is an educational program for young adults with a passion for craftsmanship and design.
We connect 16 to 28 year-olds with international and local artisans through technical courses and design ateliers, where they learn skills and explore their creative potential in ten focus areas — jewelry, pottery, embroidery, printmaking, fashion, accessories, wood carving, stone carving, product design and the culinary arts.
The TUMO Studios educational program consists of three modules and a residency. While our program model includes an approximate timeline, you’ll determine your own pace through the modules.
Module 1: Learn the Fundamentals
Build up your skills in a beginner level technical course. Technical courses are available in jewelry making, pottery, fashion and printmaking.
Duration: 3 months
Design Ateliers: N/A
Module 2: Specialize
Level up to an intermediate technical course and begin taking design ateliers with experts. You will start specializing in a focus area and building a portfolio of products.
If your product(s) is selected to become part of the TUMO Studios collection, you will receive a percentage of the profit from its sales. Beginning in Module 2, you also have the opportunity to work at TUMO Studios producing our products.
Duration: 6 months
Design Ateliers: 3-6
Module 3: Train
Level up to an advanced technical course. You will hone your craft by participating in more design ateliers and diving deeper into a focus area. The more ateliers under your belt, the more products in your portfolio and the more you learn.
Duration: 9 months
Design Ateliers: 6-9
Residency and Internships
Finally, you will complete a year-long Residency. You will design and produce an original collection of products for TUMO Studios and showcase your work in group exhibitions. You will learn about production, marketing and sales. As a resident, you will have access to internship opportunities in Armenia and beyond.
Duration: 1 year
Design Ateliers: 12-15

What is a technical course?
TUMO Studios offers technical courses in jewelry making, pottery, fashion and printmaking. They are taught by permanent staff at TUMO Studios. Each course has three levels — beginner, intermediate, advanced — and gives students a foundation of skills that prepares them for design ateliers.
The completion of at least one beginner-level technical course is required to proceed to Module 2, where students begin taking design ateliers.
Each technical course has different hour requirements. Students will have the flexibility to determine their own schedules when fulfilling them. Students may take more than one technical course at a time, provided that they complete the designated hours for each.
*Technical courses do not limit the kind of design ateliers that can be taken down the line. For example, a student who has taken a technical course in jewelry making may participate in a printmaking atelier.
What is a design atelier?
A design atelier is an educational workshop in any of our ten focus areas led by a visiting expert from Armenia or abroad.
Design ateliers are anywhere from two weeks to one month long. When in session, they take place five days a week — Monday through Friday — between the hours of 3:30 and 8:30 pm.
Design ateliers are announced one month ahead of their start date. Space is limited and enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis.
Students are required to participate in a minimum of 12 design ateliers to complete the TUMO Studios educational program.
What is the time commitment?
Completing the full educational program can take anywhere from two to three years.
TUMO Studios is open Monday through Saturday between 11:00 am and 8:00 pm. Each technical course and design atelier has its own schedule and hour requirements.
